New Location

I'm leaving Blogger. Since starting up this blog a couple years ago I've been posting here with varying levels of consistency. Some elements I've really liked, others I've been rather frustrated with.

However, as good as Blogger has been after checking out some of the Wordpress blog set-ups I have decided to move Questing for Atlantis over there. I hope what few people read my posts will follow me to the new location:

Why Is This Not Bigger News?

I occasionally use StumbleUpon to see what things pop up. Occasionally I get something wonderful and amusing, like this:

On the other hand, sometimes I get things like this:

Look, I'm no Rachel Maddow fan (although I do prefer her infinitely more than the eternally obnoxious Keith Olberman), but she is dead on with this on. President Bush's near total disregard for the Rule of Law was one of the worst elements of his presidency. Obama's promise to bring that respect back was one of the few positives of his winning the election (not to say McCain was any better).

To find that Obama has that brazenly announced his plans to maintain some of the worst policies of the Bush administration, particularly when coupled with things like the DHS report suggesting people like me are potential terror threats, is particularly upsetting - but nowhere near as upsetting as the fact that, as far as I know, Maddow's piece is the only big one on it.

Welcome to a New Libertarian

It is with great pleasure that I welcome my fellow blogger Jamelle, of The United States of Jamerica, to the fold of libertarianism.

A one-time progressive, Jamelle and I have routinely disagreed on a number of issues (but always civilly and intelligently, something I have always appreciated about him). In reading one of his latest posts though, I was very happy to see him say this:

Neoconservatives, like Stephens, have this curious (and incredibly arrogant) habit of completely disregarding the stated wishes of the people they wish to “save.”
This warms my heart to see. Like the neoconservatives Jamelle rightly derides here, progressives and other coercive utopians are all too happy to completely ignore what people want in order to institute policies that are "for their own good."

Now that Jamelle has seen the light on how wrong this is, I look forward to reading posts where he joins me in opposing progressive shibboleths like anti-smoking bills and soda taxes.

(Two notes:
One, I hope you all do pick up on the sarcasm of this piece. But I make no assumptions when it comes to the internet.
Two, from everything I've seen Jamelle is a genuinely nice guy and the sort of person every side in politics needs more of)

President Obama vs Senator Obama

I know this is pretty well covered ground already, but David Axelrod seems to have made pretty clear that Obama is renouncing his pledge that no one making less than $250,000 a year will see their taxes go up.

Here's a video from Americans for Tax Reform making explicitly clear that Obama's word is worthless.

Cap-and-Trade Video

The Tax Foundation has put out a fantastic video on cap-and-trade. I highly recommend watching it, particularly if all the discussion of the issue is leaving you a bit puzzled.
